Working from his studio in Lewes, DE, Letonoff works primarily in oils and watercolors to paint portrait, still life and figurative works. Like the Chiaroscuro artists of the Renaissance era, light is his most important resource. He creates striking contrasts between light and dark areas to affect a greater feeling of depth in his paintings.
Letonoff was interested in painting most of his life. After a career as a soldier, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia where he earned the school's prestigious Certificate degree. During this time, he was awarded the Thouron Award, the Morris Blackburn Prize, the Charles Toppan Prize, the Mable Wilson Woodrow Memorial Award and the Plastic Club Award. In addition, he attended the Ecole Des Beaux Artes in Paris, France as a Summer exchange student. He has also studied periodically with Nelson Shanks at his Philadelphia school, Incaminati.
Over the last decade, Letonoff has shown his work in numerous solo exhibitions as well as juried group shows. His work is also included in public and private collections including that of the NEw Castle County Court house in Wilmington, Delaware.
