Artist Statement

I consider myself primarily a portrait painter of objects and buildings with a concentrated focus on the details. My inspiration comes from simple subject matter found on or near the water and in rural areas. I get excited when I see peeled paint, rust and weathered wood as all of these elements challenge me to create texture I can only achieve with watercolor drybrush.

The composition is my favorite part of the creative process. I look at a real life object and imagine it in a different, often surreal setting. I believe in the drama of simple design, eliminating the clutter of everyday life, stripping away the unnecessary to get to the essence of my composition. When contemplating what elements to include in my paintings, I attach just as much importance to what I need to eliminate to achieve my goal: which is to create a painting of extreme simplicity leaving space for the imagination, a pause for reflection, to show more by showing less.

About the Artist

A self-taught artist, Eberle has been painting in watercolor since 1973. He started painting professionally in 1990 after a career in retail display. Originally from Baltimore, Eberle’s inspiration for many of his paintings comes from having lived near the Chesapeake Bay all of his life. His subject matter is very focused- an old boat, a decoy, a lighthouse, an abandoned building. All are usually ravaged by time yet rich in the imagined stories of simpler times.

Howard is a signature member of many art societies, including the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. His paintings have won him numerous awards in international competitions and two reside in the permanent collection of The State Museum of Pennsylvania. Eberle now resides in the coastal town of Lewes, DE. His works are represented by the Peninsula Gallery in Lewes and the McBride Gallery in Annapolis, MD.
