In the poem, “The Road Not Taken”, Robert Frost may provide the best description of how Delaware potter, Steve Datz found his way back to potter’s wheel following a career in the software industry. Steve describes his career path as, “more of a winding road than anything else.” After being introduced to the wheel as a young teen Steve was hooked and spent a significant portion of time in high school learning what he could about the art until other commitments and opportunities drew him away. Following high school, he attended the University of Delaware and then went on to serve as a Peace Corp volunteer in Thailand for two years. Upon completing his assignment, Steve remained in Thailand for an additional four years working for local development agencies creating and implementing HIV/AIDS education programs as well as teaching computers for an area business school. Upon returning to the States, he took up computer programming full time before his desire to reconnect with the things that matter most in his life led him back to ceramics.
Steve draws inspiration for his work from his life experiences and strives to incorporate stimulus for the senses in all the pieces he creates. “I take a look at what is around me and try to reflect that sensory input back out through my pottery. Ceramic art really appeals to all five senses and more.” His mission is to provide a vehicle for people to feel good about themselves, their surroundings and others through clay. Steve's premier work includes a unique series of double walled vases and double walled bowls as well as other decorative and functional ware. He also does workshops and At Home Paint Your Own Pottery Parties.
