By Appointment Only.
From Del Route 1, right at Old Landing Road 0.8 miles to left on Landing Drive, first left on White Oak Road to 109.
My interest in ceramic art extends to incorporate other mediums into my work. The functional work I do is always altered in some way, i.e., using additions, subtracting or coaxing the clay to an abstract form.
About the Artist
Carmela Coleman is an affirmation of the old adage, "every cloud must have a silver lining." In the mid-1990s she suffered a serious accident. Until then she had been enjoying a successful career as a real estate agent and broker. Following the accident she found emotional refuge in a pottery class given by Amie Sloan at the Academy of Lifelong Learning, and it was the birth of both a new career and a new outlook on life.
Carmela varies her work between handbuilding, with a flair toward whimsical pieces, and throwing, usually functional pieces. She especially enjoys incorporating natural elements into her art to enhance the theme of nature – wood, stone, glass, driftwood, antlers, reeds, and of Mother Nature's boundless treasures. She comments that, "It is thrilling, both in the process and in the final result, to be able to use nature's most basic components to produce objects that are appealing to others in their shape and color, their beauty, their originality, their amusement, and their functionality."
In addition to her home gallery and studio, where she welcomes customers by appointment, Carmela displays her work at the Rehoboth Art League and at various shows.
