Artist Statement

I'm self-taught, painting since late 2000. I began exhibiting during 2003. I create paintings in abstract; abstracted-realism and representational styles in bright, vibrant colors, with lots of texture. I use several types of acrylic paints applied with applicators, stylus and brushwork; on masonite.

Many of my abstract works are improvisational. I sit down in front of the easel and create a painting with no pre-conceived idea. Often, the meanings/titles for abstract pieces are developed through collaboration with my wife after completion. The titles are often subtle plays on words to express what we see in the completed works. Some are social commentary. Others are an interpretation of physical phenomena or internalization of perceptions of viewing the piece after or during completion. Thus, there can be multiple meanings in a title.

My abstract-realist paintings are often wildlife images or highly-stylized representations of urban images. These are completed using stylus-applied high texture acrylic paints and can include some brushwork. These pieces often achieve a glossy, low bas-relief effect. Adults and children alike are drawn to their colorful content and raised textures. Adults often remark on their urge to reach out and touch the pieces; while children often act upon these urges.

My representational works are generally created from original photographs. Landscapes, street scenes from pre and post-Katrina New Orleans, and greyhounds are serial subjects of these paintings. I see impressionist and post-impressionist influences in my brushwork and color palette. At exhibitions, people often suggest that the dimensionality of these paintings changes depending on the distance they are viewed from.

When I create paintings, my intention is to create colorful paintings with enduring visual appeal. My contention is that art can be subtle or bold, but should not require an advanced philosophy degree to interpret.
