The historic paper arts caught Kim Frey's attention in 1989, and she soon began creating her own designs inspired by early American scherenschnitte and fraktur. Kim cuts each piece from stained chain-laid paper, and adds watercolor, gouache, and calligraphy details, creating artworks that appear to be several centuries old. Kim also cuts historic reproduction and portrait silhouettes. Chris Frey builds the frames, and the two collaborate to create the unique faux-grained finishes that compliment the artwork.
Since 1990, the Freys' papercuts have been displayed through local art leagues and the Delaware State Museums, and has traveled across the country with the Guild of American Papercutters exhibits. The Freys also exhibit at period craft shows throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Since 2008, the Freys have been selected to Early American Life magazine's Directory of Traditional American Crafts and Holiday Directory, which highlights traditional artisans across the nation.
