Artist Statement

A prolific costume designer and craftsperson, Ms. Gina Scarnati fashions her whimsical scarves, from cozy, luxurious yarns.  Aptly named “Whims”, these creations capture the elusive three qualities most scarves lack: to be attractive, warm, and soft.  Gina finds inspiration in the natural beauty that surrounds her.  From the cool lavendar cliffs of Telluride, to the autumnal paths of the North East, there is a scarf for every palette. Each Whim is titled, numbered, and just like a print, will be made in limited batches of ten.

Locally, Ms. Scarnati has lent her talents, as a designer, craftsperson, ager-dyer, and dresser to The Grand Opera House, OperaDelaware, The Resident Ensemble Players of PTTP, the Delaware Film Company, and the DuPont Playhouse.  She recently finished sculpting helmets and armor (quite a change from the soothing process of creating scarves!) for Paramount Picture’s The Last Airbender, which was filmed in Philadelphia.  Immediately afterwards she designed her first independent feature, starring Cloris Leachman, filmed in the Poconos, and due to be released next summer.

Every project is a new source of inspiration, and she enjoys receiving emails from people who are still enjoying her scarves, even 10 years later.  All of Gina’s scarves are washable, and with the right care, will last forever.  Her creations are available at her online boutique:  www.ginasshop.com/Whims.asp
