Artist Statement

Specializing in 17th and early 18th century English, Dutch and Swedish historic reproduction clothing

I have been involved in living history re-enactments for over 25 years.  I have always made my own reproduction clothing as well as my husband’s, but after a few years in the hobby, people were asking me where we obtained a certain item of clothing.  When I told them that I had made it, they would ask me to make them one, too.

I make men and women’s clothing in military and civilian styles as well as some children’s clothing.  I use only natural fiber fabrics in my reproductions:  Linen, wool, silk and fustian (a cotton/linen blend).  I use pewter, brass, wood, bone or shell buttons or hooks and eyes.  I machine sew everything with 100% cotton or silk thread.  The patterns I use are researched using pattern books and paintings of the period, as well as secondary sources by Janet Arnold, Norah Waugh and other costume experts.

My clothing is worn by staff and volunteers at several historic sites along the Eastern Seaboard such as Henricus, Jamestown and Agecroft Hall in Virginia; Pennsbury Manor and the Colonial Plantation in Pennsylvania; and the Tall Ship Kalmar Nyckel in Delaware.  I have also supplied clothing for documentary films and stage productions.  Please e-mail me at art-n-janet@bee.net for more information or a current catalog.
